I'm Rose Harvey and this is my blog; I am a Year 12 student at The Leigh Technology Academy. I created this blog to upload all videos and work for my Media Studies A-level subject :-) Follow my twitter - @roharvey
To start of my ideas, I watched many different thriller
films and thought of the ones I already knew of. The main thriller films that
inspire me are, shutter island, seven, taken and fight club, these films are
ones that I enjoy and ones that I personally think are good overall as a
general thriller.
Sub Genre
As I had no idea were to start I decided to start with the
basics and begin to look at the different sub genres that I could go for out of
conspiracy, crimes, disaster, mystery, political, psychological, religious and
super natural I decided to go for crime and psychological I did this so that my
thriller would be more interesting. I love crime thrillers as I loved to feel
like I am apart of the movie, like I am solving the crime. I also like crime movies
as they are closely linked to mystery thrillers and the more mystery the
better. I picked psychological thrillers as well as I love the idea of flash
backs and a non-linear film. I think that having two different types of
thriller genres in one film make the audience more involved and there will be
much more mystery flying around.
I chose these sub genres due to the films shutter island and
fight club, I personally believe that the way the characters are made out is
really interesting. The idea that the audience don’t really know what is going
on with the person is what I would like to do. The audience are not told that
the main character is mental or ill in any way but by the events in the film
this is what crosses our minds until the end when all is revealed.
Characters:
As soon as I knew what genre to look into ideas flew into my
head, physiological thriller means my main character will be mentally unstable
without being to obvious or revealing, I would also like the main character to
be a narrator over the film like in fight club as I feel like this is an
interesting way to present the film. As I am creating a thriller, my character
will be an adult as thrillers are set around the ‘adult world’.
Plot:
As I chose to do a crime thriller my plot will be based
around a crime that needs solving. I chose to do a murder as I also picked
physiological, meaning that the murderer isn’t all there or may be ill in some
way. I also decided that it would be a good idea to have the victim related to
the murderer therefore I chose for the murderer to kill their mum, this way it
would be more of a mystery and the audience would be kept guessing.
Setting/Location:Many of the scenes would take place at a police station and
a interview room. The main location would be a big city, I chose London as it
is the most convenient for me. Opening scene:After looking at all of the above I decided that
my opening scene would look best if it was a very edited, variety of clips.
Starting with the man and the murderer (not seeing his face), images of the
dead women, there will be confusion and jumping effects this will allow the
viewers the see that it is a thriller film. I got my inspiration from the seven
opening credits, however I think I would like mine a bit more jumpy. The themes used in my film are: family, love, death, murder, crime.
This brainstorm is a summery of all of my ideas:
This is a collage of all of my ideas and how i got them, things that influenced me and the different things my thriller opening scene may include:
To present all of my ideas in a more interesting way i created this video, it includes all of the information that i used in order to come up with my final idea.
The first task we completed was the preliminary exercise this required to find out different information that we would need to know in order to shoot out preliminary video. As a group we found out different information then came together to create a video with all the selected info in it. To ensure that there was evidence of all of us taking part making the video we took a few different pictures.
This is me reading my notes to Danny so that he can type them into the computer.
To start off the research of our task we decided to all work together to write an exciting new script, after we had created the script we started to think about the different shots we could use and then we created a storyboard as a group, i took the pictures and Danny and Grace acted as the actors so i had something to take the pictures of. Doing of all this helped us be ready for filming out preliminary videos.
Grace took a photo of me and Danny writing the script for the preliminary task, for evidence.
Once we had shot the video, we needed to edit it all together and make sure all 'match on actions' flowed and the video looked good as a whole. We did this as a group so that we all liked the final video. Here is a picture of us editing the video together for evidence.
Me, Danny and Grace all working together in order to edit our prilimanry video together.
Straight away you feel something mysterious is going on, the beginning of the film starts of with a simple yet mysterious music playing in the background and images of a young girl at her birthday, the effects on the images make you feel like something is happening or going to happen. After a short time it flashes to a man sitting alone in his house, this makes you wonder, who? what? why?
The same man, Brian, the goes to a birthday party, his daughters. In this scene we see that him and his ex-wife have issues, she seems to act like she doesn't want him ti be there, we also see that she has a new lover who is rich and out does him by buying his daughter a horse. This makes us feel sorry for the man and we automatically wonder whats going to happen and how he feels. After the party he has a few friends round, they talk about his daughter (Kim) which leads to one of the friends saying, 'Does she appreciate the fact you have given up your life in order to be closer to her' this makes up wonder, what sort of man he really is and what is going on in his family. One of the friends offer him a job and we see him for the rough, skilled man he is as he protects a famous singer from being stabbed, he is quick and knowledgeable. We see him stop the man and get him to the floor with out any trouble. This makes he think about what sort of life he gave up for his daughter and that maybe he isn't just a lonely man like he was made out to be at the start of the film.
The next scene is where we start to wonder what is going to happen next, Kim asks permission if she can go to Paris with her friend, her dad is not happy and does not understand why she wants to go so bad. She can not go unless he signs the papers, so Kim gets very upset about it, his ex-wife gets angry and complains to him that he used to sacrifice everything for the service to the country, this tells us that Brian used to work for the country answering the previous question of what he used to do. He explains that he does not want his daughter at risk, both the ex-wife and Kim walk out. The dad goes round to her house in order to give her the singed papers, the music that is playing in the background tells us that we should feel sorry for him, he feels pressured into letting her go and doesn't actually want her to leave, this makes us feel like something bad is going to happen to her. He gives her rules and things that she must do and he says that he insists on taking her to the airport. Unfortunately Brian finds a map in Kim's bag highlighting all the different places she will be travelling this makes he angry and frustrated as he knows how dangerous the world can be, however the doesn't stop the girls from going away.
The girls arrive in Paris and everything seems normal, they share a cab with a young man who seems very normal, the arrive at their apartment and he invites them to a party, he asks for their apartment number in order to meet them later. The mystery builds when the young man rings somebody when the girls are gone, he repeats the apartment number and their ages to the strange mystery person. Te girls settle in and begin to let lose, the blast the music and have fun. Kim's dad rings but because of the music she misses it, in her way back from using the toilet Kim hears her phone, she runs to a quite room to speak to her dad. The apartment is the whole 5th floor therefore Kim can see her friend, Amanda, dancing around opposite from where she is. Kim speaks to her dad on the phone until something terrible happens and she is so shocked she does not know what to do. Men appear, they are strangers and they are trying to take Amanda. Kim explains to her dad what is going on and how the men are taking her away, mystery is flying around as you are thrown to the edge of your seats as Kim cries with fear. Brian stays clam and gets technical equipment out which implies he knows what he is doing. He asks questions about who she had meet and and what she had done, he tells her what to do and when to do it. He tells her that she is going to be taken, he tells her to scream out different things about the men so he will be able to find them. The men pull Kim from under the bed and as screams down the phone her father is left upset and determined to find her. One of the men pick up the phone Kim dropped and when he tells them that he will look for them and kill them, the strange man reply's 'Good Luck'.
Brain gets to work straight away and goes to her bedroom, he searches for anything that may be able to help him. He flies to Paris to start his search, his friend helps Brian find out what language the strange men were talking and what hey were, he is able to find out that they capture women in order to traffic them around, they drug the girls up and make them into prostitutes. The sad news comes in that he only has 96 hours in order to find Kim or he will never see her again, this is were the mystery an suspense goes wild, will he find her? who has taken her? what will Brain do next?
Brian listens to the recording of the man saying 'good luck' over and over again i order to get the voice into his head, he then travels to the girls apartment in order to get a look at the scene where his daughter was taken from. Brain looks around the place and pictures what happened on that night, he follows Kim's footsteps as to where she thinks she went. Brian then takes the memory card from Kim's phone and looks at all of the pictures she took in case there are any clues, the clever man finds an reflection of the young man who shared their cab, Brian goes after him. The young man is again at the airport trying to get more girls, Brian interrupts him trying to get another girl, he tries to get information from him, the young man runs and runs and does not speak a word to Brian. Brian is horrified when in the process of running away the young man gets killed trying to escape, his first lead to find Kim is now dead!
Brian travels all over the place in order to try and find his lost daughter, he visits different prostitute places in order to search for clues, he even hires somebody who speaks Albanian so that he can listen in on the different people talking to see if they were the ones who took his darling Kim. From listening in on the conservation he finds out that, there is new girls coming in and the place where he needs to go to find them, this is where he travels to next. At the stage area he finds many different girls in sectioned rooms, he goes past one and finds Kim's jacket with a young girl, he confronts her and tries to take her, this causes a scene with all the men running the zone but he manages to get her out and safe. He gets her to a quite room, as she has been drugged he tries to counteract the them in order to get her stable so that she is in a fit state to talk and help him out. The young girl tells Brian that Kim gave her the jacket when they were in the house, so Brian goes looking.
Brian arrives at the house and speaks to a group of men, Brian suspects the men are those that took Kim so he takes action. He questions to the men about what they do and tries to be sneaky into getting information about his daughter. He asks the men different questions in order to here all of them talk, he gets to the last man he think he may be the one he is after so he gives him a piece of paper and asks him to read what is on it, the man says 'good luck' Brain automatically knows he is the guy, Marco, a fight brakes out and most of the men end up dead. Cleverly Brian keeps Marco alive, he is now Brian's only hope of finding Kim. As Brian looks through all of the rooms in the house he comes across his daughters friend Amanda, she is dead. This makes the audience wonder, where is Kim? Is Kim alive? Will Brian find her in time?
Brian takes Marco to a little room, he sits him in a chair attached to the electrics and demands answers. He asks what he has done with his daughter and where she is now, it takes a while for Marco to corporate so Brian turns on the light to put him through pure pain every time he refuses to answer a question. Marco soon gives in and give Brian a name, Patrice St Claire. Brian left Marco to die, and set off to find his daughter. Brian visits different people until he finds what he needs, and then he finally finds out who St Claire is. He finds out where the man will be in hope Kim is there too, he finds him self in a bidding event, in order to buy the women, he manages to get into one of the rooms and sees his daughter, he threatens the man so that he buys his daughter and he will know where to find her.
After the bidding Brian gets hit, he is taken to a room and is tied up, he is scared as the men try to kill him. Brian uses his amazing skills and gets away, fighting threw any man that gets in his way. He runs all the way to where the man who 'won' his daughter is, again he fights his way threw more men in order to finding his daughter, he knows that this is his last chance, the mystery is at its highest at this point. Sitting on the edge of your seat this is were we wonder if he will ever get Kim back, he music playing adds to the drama as it makes the audience more tense and more on edge as we all want Brian to find Kim, and for Kim to be alive.
Brian arrives on the boat where Kim is, one man in particular puts up a good fight and makes the audience wonder if Brain has it in him to get there to his daughter. In the process of fighting, Brian gets sliced with a knife Brian wins the fight and he proudly walks thought to he next room to collect his daughter. To his surprise the man is holding her up at knife point, threatening to kill her. Brian takes a skilled shot at the man and kills him, Kim happily runs to her dad, scared for her life she cries into her dads shoulder so please that he came for her.
As a whole i personally think it is a excellent film, there is mystery through out the entire film and i found myself constantly on edge. As a thriller film i think it ticks all the boxes, exciting, mysterious, tense, suspense and most of all unique! When it comes to watching a film there is nothing i hate more than a boring same ole story line, Taken is a very interesting film with a unique twist to it. I would say it is a must see film, 5 out of 5.
This is a Picture of the work i did during my media lesson, it is the definition of 11 different sound terminologies that are useful to know. I was in a group of three, we had 10 minutes to research all of the different words, me and my 2 partners divided the work and found out all the meanings. It was important to do this task as it gave me the knowledge i will need when filming my thriller.
This is what i produced as my first ever sound edit piece, i worked in a group with Rosie Rattray and Emma Nye and we created this simple video. The sounds that we added create mystery and suspense to the scenes, the heavy breathing is one of the main ones that i think make the man sound mysterious, it makes him come across as a very powerful man, or on the other hand it could make it seem like he is up to something or something has just happened. The dramatic music that is behind all the sounds makes you think something is happening that you don't know about, the music makes the whole video more interesting and makes you think more.We completed up to 2.30 of the film, the whole video does not have sound as this was a practice exercise and we had limited sounds.
Evaluation:
We had issues when trying to upload the video to you tube as the software didn't want to be on our side, but after a few different methods we managed to get it on there however the video plays in the top right conner, sorry for the inconvenience but enjoy the video. Over all i believe that now i and my group have a better understanding we could improve the video however it was all good practice.
‘’How much do you know about yourself if you have never been
in a fight?’’ Tyler Durden
Fight club is a exciting, on edge film that appeals to all
that desire to be kept guessing. The film is pact with suspense and mystery as
you find out the truth behind Tyler Durden.
Fight club is an American thriller film that was made in 1999. The interesting film was directed by David Fincher and includes many well known, talented actors such as Brad pitt, Edward Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.
The most important thing about the film is that the main
character doesn’t actually have a known; he is just referred to as the
narrator. As the film begins you are confused and wonder what’s going
on as you are thrown in at the deep end, the film starts with a scene with a
man holding a gun into another mans mouth. From the first second of the film,
you begin to ask questions, Why? Who? and What? The narrator explains about how
bombs may go off and the only reason he knew is because Tyler knew. The film
the goes to another scene of the narrator in a support group for men with
testicular cancer, again this confuses the viewers and builds suspense and
raises a few questions, does he have cancer? Is he dying? The narrator then suggests
we rewind to the beginning.
The narrator explains his life; he comes across as
unhealthy, weird, confused with puffy eyes. The man explain how he can’t sleep
and he has insomnia, from the voice over of the narrator you can link the two
together, his voice is slurred and seems very dull and un interesting. After
sharing his feelings and illnesses, the narrator goes on to show that he wants
\ thinks he need medicine as he is not sleeping and it is extremely bad, this
then goes on to show he is rejected and is told by a doctor that all that will
help him is sleep its self. The suspicion arises when the narrator then goes on
to show he joins a variety of different support groups, for things he doesn’t
have. This scene then refer to the opening scene, it answers the viewers
questions that the narrator does not have cancer. The voice over explains that
with the groups, he feels wanted and special and he feels like he can let go
and cry and he is listened to, this helps him sleep at night and therefore he becomes
addicted to the groups. This gives us the impression that he is a very lonely
man, who needs a friend. If he makes himself feel better by hanging around with
the less fortunate then this causes different questions as to what sort of man
he really is.
A year goes by and the narrator is still living the same old
life, going into support groups, letting go, crying and then having a good
nights sleep. This is where we meet Marla Singer, Marla is seen doing the same thing the narrator done, he sees her attending more and more of the support groups, the narrator is not happy about this. As there is another 'faker' in the groups it stops the narrator from feeling like the people care, this stops him from being able to let go and cry resulting in him not being able to sleep once again. After some time, the narrator can not deal with it all so he decides to confront Marla about the situation and asks her to leave. They talk and in the end decide to split the days, they part and think they are never going to see each other again. This particular scene reveals a lot about the two characters, Marla is revealed a very confident mysterious character as she just walks around without a care. Crossing the road is a very simple task however, the way the producers have set this scene reveals how each character differs drastically, Marla doesn't even look and confidently strolls out between cars and causes a scene, where as the narrator timidly stands there waiting for a large gap showing him as a less confident, shy man.
After the two part the narrator goes on to explain about his, life and his work. The narrator is a very peculiar character as he gives off the impression that he would rather be dead, whilst he is on the plane explaining how he has to travel a lot he says 'every time the plane banged to sharply on take off or landing i prayed for a crash' giving the viewers the impression he is a very lonely man, this is when we begin to wonder and ask questions about the strange, character of the narrator. In this particular scene we also meet the man himself Tyler Durden, Tyler seems a attractive, well kept, sane man, we soon find out what he is really like!
As the two men depart from the plane, they go their separate ways, thinking they will never see each other again, little did they know what was round the corner, or did they? As the narrator approaches his flat he is confronted with a terrible disaster, his flat has been in a tragic incident. All his belongings have been destroyed, the narrator doesnt' know what to do or what to say, what is he going to do? The man firstly goes to call Marla, this straight away reveals that he is a very lonely person who has no friends, calling someone he has meet once and means nothing to gives the impression he has no one in his life that he cares for. Marla answers but the narrator does not speak, he hangs up and the decides to call Tyler, this again shows that he has no true friends, a terrible incident had just happened and he had no one to call but some one he had just meet half hour ago. The two men meet in a bar and have a few drinks, they get to know each other and then they leave the bar, Tyler knows that the man is looking for a place to stay so he gets him to kick up the courage and ask, they arrange it and it is set, Tyler now has a new room mate.
Before they set off for the house, Tyler asks a very strange thing of Tyler, 'Hit me' he says to the man, confused and not knowing what to do he asks what he is on about. Tyler convinces him and then they end up having a full blown fight outside the bar, the end up beating each other up so badly they are bleeding and cut. This is where we start to see the fighting aspect of the film, however this scene is one that raises man different questions as it is a very peculiar incident that you don't see everyday, it makes you wonder, why they are doing it and what an earth they are achieving by doing it.
After the fight you see both men at the house, the house is very dirty and old. The abandoned, falling apart building cant have any power when it is raining and the crakes int he roof allow drips to fall through on to varies places in the house. You can see how Tyler's lifestyle is a negative one, from the first impression we got of tyler this is a shock to the viewers. We then see them grow and become closer as friends.
As the pair become closer, they carry on fighting outside clubs and bars. More and more people heard about it and joined in, from this they realised they are not alone From this the 'Fight Club' begins! Many different people join the club, there is a secrete location where the club happens and Tyler gives the rules each week so that there is no miss understanding. During one incident, The narrator gets badly beaten, and need to go doctors, during this sense he says 'Sometimes Tyler even speaks for me' this becomes clearer and more meaningful later on in the film.
Scenes later Marla randomly appears, the phone rings its her, the mysterious lady returns! The narrator does not want to be involved with her, so just sets the phone down so that Marla keeps talking but he doesn't have to listen, this is where the drama starts. Tyler picks up the phone and ends up going round to get Marla, the both come back to Tyler's house and they end up having sex. The morning after the narrator isn't very happy, he does not say anything however from his body language and the tone in his voice you can tell he feels a bit dodgy about it. Marla tries to speak to the narrator, but he is confused as to why she is there when he ask why she is at the house Marla gets annoyed and walks out, this creates suspicion with the audience. Marla reacts like the narrator should know she was there, the fact she gets flustered and angry and walks out is mysterious and makes you wonder why she did this. Tyler then comes into the room and starts to question him about his feelings towards Marla, he then turns very serious and tells him that he must never talk to Marla about him and he must never discuss their relationship, the narrator promises however he is extremely confused about this. To the audience this is very weird, why an earth wouldn't a grown man be allowed to talk to a lady about what ever he wants? Also why does the narrator do what Tyler says, why does Tyler have such power over him?
Marla visits a number of times, one one spcific occasion is more mysterious than all the rest. The narrator and Marla barley talk when she is round their house, one afternoon he asks her to leave, again Marla is confused and angry by this she replies as she walks out of the door, 'your such a nutcase i can't begin to keep up'. This implies that something is going on between then, the audience is left unsure of what is going on.
During his time at the house the narrator receives a phone call from the police about his old condo, the police inform him that they have reason to believe that the fire was cause by a home made bomb and that it was purposely set on fire. Half way through the conversation the narrator gets flustered and questions the man weather he is a suspect, this raises different questions and opinions as why an earth would you ask this when it is your own condo, before now it had not crossed any ones minds that it was him that set his own flat on fire, now we wonder. One of Tyler's many different jobs is that he makes and sells soap, he teaches the narrator how to make it, but when doing this he severely burns the narrators hand to teach him to deal with the pain and not to block it out.
You see a change in the narrator as you see him back at work and he has a row with his boss, he stands up for himself and builds confidence like Tyler has, the narrator also says 'Tyler's words were coming from my mouth'. The fact he says this builds suspicion as during the corse of the film he has said many different things similar to this, 'Sometimes Tyler speaks for me' also during the film Tyler always bosses the narrator around and dictates what he should and shouldn't do. This is very weird as their relationship is not a normal one.
The fight club starts to get more and more serious, Tyler starts to give out homework and the club expands beyond just fighting, Project Mayhem' is born. Tyler tells the people to complete different tasks, such as smashing up cars, creating posters, changing signals or signs and mainly damaging property. When people start to get worried about all the different events go on, Tyler gets a group of people together and go to one of the main meetings where they are deciding to create a search group to look for the people responsible. They kidnap the main leader of the organisation, and threaten him to call off the search.
Tyler gives himself a task and pulls a gun on man, he threatens him and tells hims to go do something productive with his life, he tells him that if he doesn't quit his job at the shop and become a doctor he will shot him. The narrator doesn't agree with this a thinks it was to harsh, and dangerous; however he then finds the gun was never loaded. More and more incidents happen that the narrator doesn't agree with, a massive fire was started in a large building and he finds it totally unacceptable, however because of this he feels left out and like he is not receiving all the knowledge everyone else is. The narrator confronts Tyler about this and they have a little disagreement, during this Tyler shouts out 'Your pathetic look at you, why do you think i blew up your condo?' This creates much confusion, why? Tyler had not even meet the narrator at this point they were abroad when they met how could he of done it? What is going on, why did Tyler do it? When the narrator arrives back at the house, Tyler is no where to be seen, where has he gone? Why has he gone?
After much confusing the narrator decides to go looking for Tyler he is confused and unsure of what to do, while he does this he says 'everywhere i went i felt like i had been there before' this refers back to the narrator being controlled and over powered by Tyler why did he feel like this? The narrator talks to a bar tender and he acts like he had seen him before, the narrator is confused, the bar tender then calls him 'Tyler Duden', why did he do this? Is he mucking with his mind or is the narrator really the real Tyler Durden? The narrator is now truly confused, thinking he is Tyler he rings Marla and questions her to weather they have ever had sex, she replays ' Yes' she also calls him 'Tyler', the narrator i now utterly confused and has no clue what to do. Then suddenly just out of the blue, Tyler appears!
Tyler and the narrator have a heated discussion and fight other what the hell is going on. Tyler argus that they are the same person, he explains that he is a figure of the narrator imagination. Who is telling the truth? Who is Tyler Durden? The scene then switches and the narrator seems normal, he seems to try and stop project mayhem, and save the mess Tyler has created. Firstly he sends Marla away, he believes she knows to much. To try and stop all the madness he hands himself into the police so that no harm can be done, with all the thoughts going through his head he is not sure what to think, when the main detective walks out to talk to other staff members, 3 detectives question the narrator and tell him they new he would try to stop project mayhem. Police say 'you said if any one got in the way we should stop them. Narrator replies 'your making a big mistake' to what they reply 'you said you would say that', so the narrator replies ' i am not Tyler Durden' the police men then repeat 'you said that you would say that too'. The narrator escapes from the three men and runs as fast as he can to one of the building where he believes the bombs are going to go off.
Tyler appears when the narrator reaches the buildings, Tyler act likes he is not bothered, however when the narrator tries to stop the bomb he gets in the way, the narrator shots Tyler and nothing happens, this then reinforces the idea that Tyler is in fact a made up person and he was telling the truth. Tyler and the narrator have a fight, Tyler has the upper hand as he can appear and reappear (due to him not being real), we also see the fight from the cctv cameras point a view and this again goes against the narrator in that Tyler is in fact a person of his imagination, Tyler does not appear in the cameras. The narrator gets knocked down by Tyler then it flashes back to the first scene of the film with him with a gun in his mouth.
Tyler is threatening the narrator with a gun, he does not shot but he torments him. Out of the window the narrator sees that Tyler has found Marla and brought her back, he gets angry about this, before anybody can reach the top of the building where the two men are, the narrator has a brain wave, he realises that he controls him, therefore he imagines the gun in his own hand then he shots himself so he lives but it kills Tyler. Marla appears and the narrator and her stand together watching all of the buildings sadly explode and fall down to the ground.
Overall i think the film it very interesting and has a very good exciting story line, however as a thriller i would say some improvements could be made. The twist was not clear the whole way through and the idea of mystery and suspense was not there. The idea and thought behind the main character and Tyler is good and very unique but it is not clear that something strange is occurring until the very end. However i would watch this film again and i do recommend it. I would give the film 3.5 out of 5 stars.
After looking at what my peer said and looking over all of my comments and posts, i would give myself a score of 15, this means i would receive a B grade. I personally believe that i could receive a level 4 by then end if i carry out the following targets:
Adding task 8, 9, 10, 11 to my blog.
Group together relevant tasks into the same post to make my bog more presentable and logical.
Increase the detail i put into my annotation, to allow readers to understand what i did and why.
As one of my tasks was to create three different spoiler reviews, out of all of the different thrillers there are i couldn't possible chose where to start. Inception is one of my favourite films, and i was determined to write a review on it, however i found this extremely hard. It is such a good thriller film, it created huge amount of mystery as i still find it hard to understand now after watching it 3 times.
Release Date: July 8th - Initial release
Director: Christopher Nolan
Music: Hans Zimmer
Screenplay: Christopher Nolan
Inception is a science fiction/action thriller film produced and directed by Christopher Nolan, it stars many big names like Leonardo Dicaprio, Ken Watanabe, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy and many more. Leonardo Dicaprio is the lead role, playing Dom Cobb who is a professional thief who specializes in conning secrets from his innocent victims by infiltrating their dreams.
I decided to take my own approach and get a extra deep understanding of the film including the characters, the plot and just a general understanding. While browsing and researching i came across and very helpful\interesting picture which i thought helped explain the film a lot. The image clearly states all of the different levels the characters enter during the film. Even after watching the film many times i am still unsure what i feel about the ending, many people say Dom was in the dream others say he returned to reality.
The film starts out within a dream, straight away mystery is building up as you start to ask questions, why are they in dreams? Who are they? What are they doing? All of these questions circle your head as you watch the film inception, i personally believe there isn't a moment in the film where you can turn your head, the moment you look away you lose track it is a very intriguing film and you have to watch carefully so that you do not miss any clues. After you see a little of the dream, you see the men in the dreams being woken up, you see this as an extremely weird scene as the men are in like traps and are woken up by weird ways such as being tipped into a bath tub.
As they leave the dream in the first scene you start to gain a little bit more of a understanding, of the film. You learn what they actually do and why they go into each others dreams. You also learnt that if the little ball object they have keeps spinning they are in a dream, if it stops it is reality, this is important for them as sometimes they are put into dreams by others when they do not wish to be in a dream. The film includes many different scene where the main character Dom checks to see weather he is in a dream, this makes him seem like a worried mysterious character.
The film has many different scenes where the characters go into different dreams and meet new people, the film as a whole is very exciting and reveals many different mysterious characters and places, one of the main scenes where Dom is explaining how the dreams work shows a very unique interesting frame where the city folds over, the whole concept of the film is mysterious, the suspense is built as you never know what is going to happen and who's dream it is and why they are there.
The film then Goes round the theme that Dom is hiding something about his lover and where she is,m he thinks about her and the golden rule is that u can not think about real \ old places when you are thinking of a dream to go to. Suspense is slowly built up and up as you don't know the truth about his lover until it is final revealed that she is in the lowest level of dreams (Limbo) and she is stuck there. The end of the film shows the group of people escaping from the dream, however it is unclear about what happens to Dom. All of the other characters get out of the dream in different ways, suspense is at its highest at this point as you are made to feel on edge and wonder weather the characters are going to make it or not. Dom is then shown with his lover, this makes us think that he is also stuck in Limbo, the last scene of him is him spinning the little object to see weather he is there or not, personally i think he is still in the dream.
As a whole i did not fully enjoy the film, i believe it is a extremely good film and is very unique however i think that i didn't enjoy it as much as i could of. The story line is very mysterious and interesting however in order to be able to follow the story line completely i would make it a little bit more simple. As a whole i would rate the film 3 out of 5.
This video is a homework assignment that i was set, i was in a group with Danny, Rosie and Grace. Our task was to create a presentation to give information about narratives, sub-genres and enigma codes. As a group we thought of many different ideas, we didn't have a clue what we was going to do in order to make the presentation interesting and unique. We did some research and asked if anybody new any interesting website, we finally came across this one, where we managed to create this video.
The video allows us to get all the information across but in a more interesting way. We added effects and animations so that the characters where more interesting and not stationary this then effected the camera angels and made the whole video more affective.
As there is no evidence of who took part in making the video, we took pictures as we each did our part in making the video, each time we swapped over we took a snap so ghat there was evidence to back up is all taking part in making the video.
This is the photo of me creating my part of the video, i also took part in reading through all of the notes that we took in class in order to make the presentation possible.
This is me at home, uploading the video and presenting it on my blog and on you tube for everyone to view.
One of the first things i did as a media student was remake the title sequence of dexter, i did this in a group with Rosie Rattray, Emma Nye an Hannah Coston. We worked together to film the different shots, emma did the acting and we all took it in turns to film. When editing the sequence Hannah and Rosie started off by cutting the clips i then organised them and added the music. Here is the final video:
When filming the Dexter sequence i was in a group with Emma Rosie and Hannah, we all took part when it came to making the re-make. As only Emma was acting we took some pictures in order to show evidence that we had all contributed.
This is Emma at the beginning of the shot, setting up the camera.
This is Rosie filming the first scene of the Dexter sequence.
This is Hannah filming Emma in the mirror shoot.
Rosie is setting up the camera in order to film Emma for the next scene.
